Calculate Your NICL AO Score
Accepted formats: numbered (1-A, 2:C, 3. D, 4) B or "5 A") or a plain sequence of letters (A B C D). Use X or _ for a question you left blank. Only options A–D count as answers; anything else is treated as unattempted. If your answer or key sheet uses 1–4 for options, a plain list of digits also works.
Question ranges for each section
The ranges below assume the sections appear in the order shown. If your question paper is arranged differently, change the ranges; the total score does not depend on them.
Descriptive Test Marks (Qualifying)
30 minutes, 30 marks: essay 10, précis 10, comprehension 10. Typed on the computer in English. Qualifying only; not counted in merit.
Final Merit Estimator (80:20)
Final merit combines the Mains objective marks and the interview in an 80:20 ratio. Enter your marks, or calculate a Mains stage above and press "Use my Mains result".

The formula
Worked example
A candidate scores English 22 correct and 4 wrong (21.00), Reasoning 25 correct and 6 wrong (23.50) and Quant 18 correct and 8 wrong (16.00). The Prelims score is 21.00 + 23.50 + 16.00 = 60.50 out of 100. Notice that Quant is the weakest section, which matters if a sectional cut-off applies.
From Mains and interview to merit
If a generalist scores 160 of 250 in the Mains objective test (64 on a 100 scale) and 70 of 100 in the interview, the estimated merit is 0.80 × 64 + 0.20 × 70 = 65.20 out of 100. See our guide on shortlisting ratios and weightage for more examples.
What this tool cannot do
It does not know the final key, revised keys, cut-offs, the regional-language requirement (if any) or the interview rules. Please confirm these in the official notification on the company website. Figures here are drawn from the notification as summarised on APDSC.net and may change.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the negative marking in NICL AO?
One-fourth (0.25) of the marks of a question is deducted for each wrong answer in the Prelims and in the Mains objective test. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.
How is the final merit decided?
Final merit combines the Mains objective marks and the interview in an 80:20 ratio. The descriptive test is qualifying only and does not count toward merit. Candidates must also meet the minimum interview marks.
Do I need to clear every section in the Prelims?
The notification says each Prelims section is separately timed and must be cleared, so check your section marks as well as the total. Cut-offs are announced by the company, so enter them above only if you know them.
Why are Prelims marks not in the final merit?
The Prelims is a shortlisting stage. About 15 times the number of vacancies is shortlisted for the Mains, subject to availability.
Is the merit estimate exact?
No. The estimator converts the Mains and the interview to a 100 scale and weights them 80:20. The company defines the exact conversion and other rules, so use the estimate only as a guide.
