Eligibility Highlights

Selection Process

  1. Phase I – Prelims: an online objective test used for shortlisting.
  2. Phase II – Mains: an online objective test plus a qualifying descriptive test. About 15 times the vacancies are shortlisted from Phase I, subject to availability.
  3. Interview: for candidates shortlisted on Mains objective marks.

Final merit combines the Mains objective marks and the interview in an 80:20 ratio. The descriptive test is only qualifying and its marks do not enter merit. A waiting list of up to 50% of the vacancies may be prepared, and ties go to the higher interview score and then to the older candidate.

Phase I (Prelims) – all disciplines

SectionQuestionsMarksTime

Reasoning Ability353520 min
Quantitative Aptitude353520 min

Each section has its own timer, and the notification says each section must be cleared. In practice that means you cannot carry spare minutes from English into Quant, and you must reach the cut-off in every section, not only the total.

Phase II (Mains) – Generalist, 250 marks, 180 minutes

The descriptive test is 30 minutes and 30 marks (essay 10, précis 10, comprehension 10), typed on the computer in English, and it is qualifying only.

Worked Example: Prelims Score with 0.25 Negative Marking

Section score = Correct − (Wrong × 0.25)
Prelims score = sum of the three section scores
SectionQuestionsCorrectWrongUnattemptedNet marks
English Language30224421.00
Reasoning Ability35256423.50
Quantitative Aptitude35188916.00
Total10065181760.50

This candidate attempts 91 questions, gets 65 right and 26 wrong, and scores 60.50 out of 100. Notice the section pressure: the Quant score of 16.00 is the lowest even though only 8 answers were wrong, because only 18 were correct. If a sectional cut-off were set at, say, 17 in Quant, this candidate would be at risk despite a healthy overall score. Always check the sectional numbers, not just the total.

How an objective Mains score works

For a generalist who gets 170 correct and 40 wrong out of 250 questions, the Mains objective score is 170 − (40 × 0.25) = 160.00 out of 250. That figure, together with the interview score, produces the final merit under the 80:20 rule. The exact scaling between the two is defined in the official notification.
